Helical gears are a type of gears with teeth that are cut at an angle to the face of the gear. Unlike spur gears, which have straight teeth that are parallel to the axis of rotation, helical gears have teeth that are oriented at an angle. This angle is known as the helix angle, and it can vary depending on the design and application.

Do helical gears produce axial thrust?
Helical gears generate axial thrust. Due to the inclination angle of the tooth surface of the helical gear, during operation, the helical gear will be subjected to an axial force, namely axial thrust. The magnitude of axial thrust of helical gears depends on factors such as gear design, helix angle, and load. In certain applications, such as high-speed transmission systems or heavy-duty transmission systems, the axial thrust of helical gears may be relatively high, and corresponding measures need to be taken to balance or eliminate the axial thrust, such as installing thrust bearings or using balance mechanisms.

Are helical gears single helical gears or double helical gears?
A helical gear can be a single helical gear or a double helical gear, depending on its structure and working principle.
A single helical gear refers to a gear with only one bevel, usually used for closed gear transmission. In a single helical gear, the axes of two gears are parallel to each other and there is only one inclination angle between them. This type of gear is usually used to transmit large amounts of power and torque, but may produce significant noise and vibration.
Double helical gear refers to a gear with two inclined surfaces, usually used for open gear transmission. In a double helical gear, two inclined surfaces are placed adjacent to each other with a gap between them. Each face has the same but opposite helix angle. The use of double helical gear sets eliminates thrust loads and provides greater tooth overlap and smoother operation possibilities.
In summary, both single helical gears and double helical gears are a type of helical gear, which have different structures and working principles. In practical applications, the appropriate type of helical gear should be selected according to specific needs to achieve the best transmission effect and performance.
